HISTORY
A 100 Year Legacy
Hemingway formerly resided on Bangkok's Sukhumvit Soi 14, housed within a magnificent 100-year-old teak-framed structure from the 1920s. Originally built by a revered Thai general known as “The Duke,” this architectural gem was constructed for just a few hundred thousand baht at the time, yet was esteemed as a mansion despite its modest two or three bedrooms.
The Duke, regent to King Rama 8, initially owned the residence before passing it to his son, who served as Ambassador to Laos and was married to the Princess of Laos. Subsequently, the house became an official Ambassador’s residence, notably hosting the French Ambassador during the 1940s.
TODAY
New Beginnings
Hemingway, now located in Sukhumvit Soi 11, has been meticulously crafted to embody the essence, beauty, and ambiance of the original old golden teak house. Carefully reclaimed from demolition and situated just a stone's throw away from its original location.
Our venue has been purpose-built from the ground up, with a design that pays homage to the distinctive characteristics of the original house. Our vision was to recreate the lush garden, portico, and Habana Bar, faithfully using the original layout, furniture, and familiar features.
HEMINGWAY
An iconic figure
Hemingway was truly one of life's extraordinary figures, journeying to some of the world's most captivating and exotic destinations. From the mojito-fueled dance bars of old Havana to the serene fishing backwaters of Key West, Florida, and the timeless romantic streets of Paris, his adventures were legendary.
This iconic figure famously ran with the bulls in Pamplona, hunted on the Serengeti, and experienced the highs and lows of life, from being wounded in WWI to participating in the Spanish Civil War and sharing drinks with dictators in Cuba. Throughout it all, he was rarely seen without a drink in hand, yet somehow never spilling a drop. And amidst these adventures, he managed to write a few books that left an indelible mark on literature.
At Hemingway we celebrate his enduring legacy by paying homage to the places he lived, the drinks he cherished, and the great cuisines of the world. We invite you to join us in experiencing this legacy every day. Cheers to Hemingway!
